Thunder Bay to Host CarNext presents WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Final Stage in 2024

The World Cup returns to Canada with the CarNext presnts WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Final Stage in Thunder Bay from July 28-August 3.

Canada has hosted the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup twice before (the inaugural tournament in 2004 and the tournament in 2012), and in 2023 Canada and Japan will host two groups for the inaugural tournament under WBSC’s new two-stage format.

There are just 30 days until the start of the 9th WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Final Stage.

The Women’s Baseball World Cup was held in Edmonton, Alberta in 2004 and 2012. Canada won the bronze medal both times, finishing behind the United States and Japan in 2004 and behind Japan and the United States in 2012.

Thunder Bay, Ontario, which completed Group A success in 2023, will host the final stage in 2024.

Though a relatively small city (population approximately 110,000), Thunder Bay, located just an hour north of the US border on Lake Superior, has a long history as a WBSC host city, having hosted the XXIV U-18 Baseball World Cup in July 2010 and the XXVIII U-18 Baseball World Cup in September 2017. Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boszkoff commented, “We are excited and proud to host the WBSC IX Women’s Baseball World Cup Final Stage in 2024. Thunder Bay has earned a reputation as one of the best hosts for international baseball tournaments, and this will be the third world tournament to be held in our region in the last 15 years. We are confident that the players, coaches and spectators will enjoy the experience and that their achievements will be a source of inspiration for young girls around the world.”

“Thunder Bay has a top reputation as a destination for international baseball tournaments.”

Chinese Taipei won the championship in Thunder Bay in 2010 and the USA was the U-18 Baseball World Champion in 2017. Canada missed out on the podium both times.

The U-18 Baseball World Cup has left a valuable legacy for Thunder Bay. During the 2017 tournament, Thunder Bay International Airport broke its all-time monthly passenger records. A historic monthly high of 81,003 passengers was recorded as international fans and teams flocked to the airport in late August ahead of the September 1 opening day.

The Final Stage of the Women’s Baseball World Cup presented by CarNext will be held at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay, with world ranked No. 1 Japan, No. 2 Chinese Taipei, No. 3 Venezuela, No. 4 USA, No. 5 Mexico and No. 7 Canada competing in a round-robin tournament until August 1.

After a rest day, the top two teams will compete in the final, and the third and fourth place teams will play in a third place match.

The final and third place match are scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd.

In the previous tournament, Japan defeated Chinese Taipei in the final on September 1, 2018, to become the Women’s Baseball World Cup champions.
