NBA News: Scottie Barnes gets maximum contract with the Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to a contract extension with young star Scottie Barnes. This could be worth up to $270 million over five years. ESPN reported this on Monday. The contract can be officially signed on July 6th.

The most expensive contract in franchise history will earn the 22-year-old at least $225 million. If he makes it onto an All-NBA team or All-Defense team, or is even named MVP, the deal will rise to a “supermax.”

Barnes was drafted fourth overall by the Raptors in the 2021 draft and won the Rookie of the Year award in his first season in the NBA. Last season, he averaged 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. The reward: He was named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career.

However, Barnes is still waiting for playoff success with the Raptors: In his rookie season, the team failed in the first round in six games against the Philadelphia 76ers. In the past two years, Toronto missed the offseason.
