Tradition Reigns at the Pif Classic Champions’ Match in Quintal Park

It had been two years since the rain played spoilsport. Not this time: the traditional champions’ match took place Wednesday evening at Quintal Park as part of the Pif Classic.

We often say never two without three; I was scared because yesterday storms were forecast around 6 p.m.”,”text”:”I’m very happy! We often say never two without three; I was scared because yesterday storms were forecast around 6 p.m., confides, relieved, Radio-Canada journalist Jean Arel. He was the commentator for this match which brought together public figures, athletes, high-level sportsmen and women, journalists and presenters during a friendly game.

The list of players was as long as it was varied. From singer-songwriter Priscillia Quirion to Stéphane Waite to Lewis Gendron of the Sherbrooke Phoenix, many players gathered on the field have little experience with a baseball glove in their hands. Nothing, however, to prevent you from having fun.

It’s fun, Pif. On the one hand, it’s a really, really interesting recurring event for the region. On the other hand, we see a lot of people that we only see once a year or so. It’s a beautiful summer evening, summarizes the former director of Hockey Quebec, Jocelyn Thibault, who admits, however, that his knowledge of baseball is rather limited.

This is not the case for Stéphane Waite. Most people in Estrie know me more for baseball than for hockey. I spent my life at the Amédée-Roy stadium. I played for the Athletics and the Expos, so I have a bit of affinity, says with a smile the man who was also the goalie coach for the Montreal Canadiens.

Except that beyond the sport, he also comes to play for the pleasure of coming together.

It’s always fun to meet lots of people I know. It’s a tradition.

This pleasure of coming together is also mentioned by Jean Arel. It’s rare that we have the opportunity to meet people from different media. We benefit from it, he assures us. A feeling no doubt shared in the stands, almost all filled.

The Sherbrooke Phoenix mascot Onyx, who came to encourage the members of his team, took advantage of a break between two matches to do some crazy things.

A good start

Except for the rain at the start of the week, Mother Nature has been rather benevolent so far with the organization of the Pif. The chapels were on the clotheslines, as they say!, laughs the president of the tournament, Marco Leclerc.

Besides, he assures that everything has been going well since the start of the week.

Everything goes smoothly with lots of spectators. Last night [mardi]it was a very busy evening.

A quote from Marco Leclerc, president of the tournament

We are able to play all our games on very safe surfaces. That’s the primary goal, he explains. As long as we can, when we consider that the grounds are suitable for playing, we will play.

Has a team ever managed to stand out? Naturally, there are teams that have been there for a long time. Among the girls, we can consider that the bar Le Shelby is still a team that is competitive, but there are teams that are a little hot for their butts”,”text”:”There are surprises. Among the girls, we can consider that the bar Le Shelby is still a team that is competitive, but there are teams that are a little hot for them, he smiles.

The Pif Classic is one of the largest slow pitch tournaments in North America. It takes place at Quintal Park until June 30.
