Regarding the accident at Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, in which a male student on the baseball team suffered a head injury during practice and later died, the city’s Board of Education will be holding a press conference at 3:00 p.m. on the 22nd to provide details about the situation.

At the beginning of the press conference, Superintendent of Education Tokuyoshi Ikuta apologized, saying, “We are extremely sorry that an extremely serious, irreparable accident occurred under the school’s management and that a precious life was lost. We would like to offer our sincere apologies to the student who passed away and to his family.”

According to the city’s Board of Education, on the 11th of this month, at around 5:30 pm, a second-year male student (14) from the baseball team at a junior high school in Hatsukaichi City suffered a head injury during practice. A medical institution was immediately arranged for the student to be examined, but his condition suddenly worsened that night. The student was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but he never regained consciousness and passed away on the 17th.

The boy was practicing long tee batting and playing defense in the outfield when he collided with another student while trying to catch the ball, apparently hitting his head at that time.

When the school nurse rushed to the scene, the student was not unconscious and was able to talk. There was no bleeding, but after finding swelling on the left side of the head, she decided it would be better to have the student examined at a hospital. She contacted the student’s parents and asked them to take the student to a medical institution arranged by the school.

The city board of education plans to set up an investigative committee of experts to analyze the issues and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
