The tragic accident that claimed the life of six-year-old Lucy Morgan occurred while she was on vacation with her family in Limerick, Maine. The incident took place on June 1 when the aluminum shaft of a badminton racket broke loose from the wooden handle and hit the girl on the head.

Lucy Morgan, from Stockholm, New Jersey, was enjoying her lakeside vacation at a house rented by her family. The girl was playing badminton with her older brother when her racket broke and the sharp piece of her shaft pierced her skull, causing a critical brain injury. According to a Maine State Police report, the girl was rushed to a hospital in Sanford and then, due to the severity of her injuries, was transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to ABC News.

Lucy’s father, Jesse Morgan, is pastor of Green Pond Bible Chapel in Newfoundland, New Jersey. On his blog, Morgan detailed how the accident occurred while he and his wife Bethany were resting in the back of the house. Hearing the children’s screams, they both ran to the front of the house and found Lucy unconscious but breathing. She was immediately taken to the hospital, according to NBC News.

Maine State Police confirmed in a news release that the aluminum shaft of a badminton racket had detached from the wooden handle and hit the girl in the head, causing a hole in her skull. Lucy was declared brain dead at 1:32 a.m. on June 5 after several days of intense fighting in the hospital. Her heart stopped beating around 4 a.m. the same day, according to Telemundo.

A memorial service for Lucy is scheduled for June 15 at Green Pond Bible Chapel and will be streamed live on her official website, according to NBC News.
