Transfer Window Update: Borussia Mönchengladbach Eyes Fortuna Star Christos Tzolis

The hero of this season is celebrated: top scorer Christos Tzolis (2nd from right) celebrates a goal on May 19, 2024.

Now things could happen very quickly!

Despite a disappointing Bundesliga season, Borussia Mönchengladbach does not have to look to the second division next season – but it is worth it during the transfer window. Now more than ever. Fortuna Düsseldorf recently made an important decision for a highly sought-after player.

Gladbach interested in Fortuna star – transfer now possible

Fortuna officials have decided to exercise the purchase option of Christos Tzolis (22)! The club announced this in a press release on Thursday (May 30, 2024).

The top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga last season (22 goals) is now signed permanently by the English club Norwich City, who had loaned the Greek to Düsseldorf.

Because they missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga, the transfer fee is likely to be around 3.5 million euros. That’s no small sum for Fortuna, but those in charge can be sure that the money will be recouped.

The market value of the 22-year-old is already estimated at around seven million euros, and rising. The club from the state capital could receive the windfall sooner than it might like.

In an emotional interview after the lost relegation match against VfL Bochum (May 27, 2024, 5:6 on penalties), the national player explained that he would like to stay in Düsseldorf, but that it would be “very difficult” in the 2nd Bundesliga. The professional’s ambitions are higher.

A likely scenario is the direct resale of the attacking player. According to several reports, Borussia Mönchengladbach is one of the main interested parties. The Foals have the advantage: Despite the disappointing season, including the relegation battle, they will also compete in the Bundesliga next season – unlike Düsseldorf.

Gladbach could also probably beat the reported annual salary of one million euros in Düsseldorf. The dribbler has shown at Fortuna that he definitely has what it takes to play in the top division, and Borussia would have to spend money accordingly, as there is a lot of interest from the Bundesliga.

Sporting director Klaus Allofs (67) explained that the new contract contains a clause that allows a transfer to take place during this transfer window: “It contains an exit clause with the possibility for the player to change clubs again during the upcoming transfer period under certain conditions.”

At the general meeting on April 22, Gladbach management announced that new signings can only be financed through its own sales. Borussia must therefore also look for buyers for potentially profitable departures.

The deadline for exercising the purchase option for Tzolis is May 31st, so Fortuna waited until shortly before the end. The Düsseldorf purchase makes the path for a Gladbach transfer much easier. A return to Norwich would probably have come with a much higher price tag for Tzolis.
