Tsunoda received a hefty fine for inappropriate words. He defended himself by saying that English is not his mother tongue and he did not know the meaning of the words – F1sport.cz

Júki Cunoda had to go before the sports commissioners after qualifying because of a possible violation of the International Sports Code.

In the heat of the moment, riders routinely use profanity on the team radio. The FIA deals with this only if the insults are directed at FIA officials or in some other way may violate international sporting regulations.

Júki Cunoda had to go to the carpet due to profanity in the qualification. The RB driver was upset in Q1 with his Chinese rival Chou, who overtook him in the pit lane.

“These guys are f***ing retarded,” said Cunoda, which was picked up by fans who shared it on social media and then the FIA.

Cunoda was investigated for a possible breach of Article 12.2.1.f of the FIA International Sporting Regulations. It states that it will be considered a violation of the rules if there is “any word, act or written expression that has caused moral damage or loss to the FIA, its bodies, members or executives and more generally to the interests of motorsport and the values defended by the FIA”.

He was fined

“During the hearing, the rider was very apologetic and explained that since English is not his mother tongue, he did not know the meaning of the words used in the English language until the end of the session (qualification, editor’s note). He stated that he was horrified when he found out,” the stewards said in the minutes.

“He claimed he had a different understanding of the words, but acknowledged that should not be taken as an excuse for what he did.”

The stewards appreciated Cunoda’s honesty but said his words were “offensive and completely inappropriate”.

“Using such words on a platform that is accessible to the public was tantamount to an offense as defined in Article 20 of the International Sports Code. In the circumstances, the stewards decided that a severe fine should be imposed, but also took into account the rider’s sincere remorse and his offer of a public apology and for these reasons decided to suspend part of the fine imposed.”

Cunoda was fined 40,000 euros. Half of this amount was granted conditionally – Cunoda would only pay it if he committed a similar transfer again before the end of the season.
