Turkish Federation of the Hearing Impaired stated that the Deaf National Basketball Team will not participate in the European Championship due to budget problems.
National Team basketball players shared a statement about the incident and explained the situation.
In the statement made, ”We were going to participate in the 14th European deaf basketball championship to be held in Malaga, Spain on 21-29 June, and we completed our camp as the National Team for this tournament on 6-19 May. Then we were told that we would camp again at the beginning of June and go to the tournament.
When we came to June, the Turkish Federation of the Hearing Impaired told us that we did not have enough budget for camping and our June camp was cancelled.
As a whole team, we wanted to go to the European Championship without camping and fight until the last sweat in the national jersey, and we did not cause any problems.
Afterwards, they informed us that all athletes would issue their own Gray (Service) passports.
As all athletes, we took out our passports without receiving a single penny from the Federation for the camp we did or for these passport fees, and we also paid the necessary travel fees for the camp from our own pockets.
With 1 week left until the start of the tournament, all athletes prepared with special training and completed the necessary paperwork.
Today I am sharing with you the message we received from the federation;
”Hello how are you?
As you know, our government announced savings measures. In this context, it does not seem possible for us to participate in the championship at the moment, our federation president has been trying to solve this budget problem for two months, but he informed me that there is no positive result yet, so we will not be able to participate in the championship.
By receiving this message, our dreams and efforts as all athletes were thrown away.
While the Turkish Federation of the Hearing Impaired is able to organize a camp for our national women’s team, which has been going on for about 2 months, as part of preparation for the tournament, they do not take our national women’s team to the European championship, citing austerity measures and saying we do not have a budget.
“We wanted to share this shame with you, thank you.” expressions were used.
