Two battles between the Czechs and the Turks for everything: Always checkmate at the last minute and departure from the Euro

All in, or winner takes all, and the loser ends up empty-handed. Czech footballers have already experienced this duel with Turkey twice in their history. And at the European Championships in 2008 and 2016, he finished badly for them each time. Especially the first one was very painful…

June 15, 2008, Turkey – Czech Republic 3:2

Total shots 1st half / 2nd half: 5:10 / 11:4.

That match is probably the blackest in the history of the independent Czech national team. A completely unprecedented collapse of the team, which at the same time was overgrown with the heroes of the previous (bronze) Euro in 2004. On the bench, it was once again commanded by a gray-haired strategist with a mischievous smile, Karel Brückner. When Jaroslav Plašil made it 2-0 after an hour of play and expressed the clear superiority of the Czech team, few thought that the duel could turn out badly for the Czechs. But it happened…

After a while, someone waved his hand over Jan Polák’s wasted chance. It doesn’t matter if you win 2:0 or 3:0, the main thing is to advance to the quarterfinals… However, it was at that moment that the match broke. It was as if the rain, which began to fall on the grass of the Geneva stadium in the second half, was living water for the Turks. Shortly afterwards they reduced, however, the management of Koller et al. held despite the opponent’s strong pressure until the 87th minute.

In it, Petr Čech, the infallible goalkeeper for many years, jumped on an innocent cross into the Czech penalty area, but the slippery ball fell out of his gloves directly onto the foot of Nihat Kahveci and the score was equalized. At that moment, the bizarre scenarios discussed before the match would come true. Due to the same balance of both teams after two games, in the event of a draw, penalties would determine the advancing team. However, they did not. Unfortunately for the Czechs.

The Turks, who had never beaten the national team before and collected a score of 3:13 in four games with it, breathed their last and fatal blow. The Czech defense didn’t handle the offside system at all, and Tomáš Ujfaluši stepped out hastily and Nihat ran into the created crater. He hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area against the crossbar into the goal above the advancing Czech and the worst quarter of an hour in the history of the national team was completed.

Even a red card for goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, who pushed Jan Koller without the ball, did not help the draw. And since the Turks had already used up all the substitutions at that time, Tuncay Sanli, then a midfielder of English Middlesbrough, a Premier League participant, had to catch up the last minutes. He resisted and was able to celebrate with the others. His team beat the Swiss and Croatians in a very similar way at the tournament and reached the semi-finals. In five games, he led a total of just 13 minutes…

June 21, 2016, Czech Republic – Turkey 0:2

Goalkeeper hits: 0:5.

Eight years later, a weaker decoction of the one described above took place. However, this does not mean that the actors in the jersey of the national team did not hurt. The Czechs had a better starting position after the narrowest loss against Spain and a draw with the Croatians, the opponent was without a point after two defeats against the same opponents, with a score of 0:4 and a weak hope of promotion. In addition, there was talk of the fact that the team is plagued by internal contradictions among the players (after all, like every time).

That is also why it was expected that the Turks would not have to bite as much as they usually can. No matter what, the Czechs had plenty of chances. Only in the first half did Sivok hit the post with his head, Plašil’s shot under the crossbar also had goal parameters. But the national team was already losing it. Two legionnaires from Bursaspor in Turkey, Sivok and Necid, made a mistake in the 10th minute and the opponent scored from the break. He then added the second goal half an hour before the end.

However, it was preceded by a close offside by the recording Topal, such a goal would not have passed through the available control mechanisms this year. The Czechs, under the baton of coach Pavel Vrba, played the first major tournament in their independent history without a single victory. After the match, Petr Čech, Tomáš Rosický (missed in the match due to a muscle injury) and Jaroslav Plašil, three of the quartet of players with the most starts for the Czech Republic, ended their careers in the national team. In the end, success in the match was of no use to the Turks, they became the first non-advancement overall from third place…
