UEFA EURO 2024: Austria’s successful team behind the team

“We have an outstanding coaching staff with high technical competence, but also with interpersonal skills and a good instinct. In addition, with Peter Schöttel we have a very experienced sports director who supports us. We probably have the best team chef in all of Europe, we have top people in all areas. Everything is based on teamwork,” said Rangnick on ZIB2.

The coaching staff consists of six people, seven if you include Alaba. Then numerous supervisors are responsible for everything else. Rangnick’s closest confidant in his team of assistants is Lars Kornetka, who has worked alongside the “Professor” since 2007. The other assistants are Peter Perchtold, who is responsible for standards and kick-off tricks, Onur Cinel for solutions with the ball and game analyst Stefan Oesen as well as goalkeeping coach Michael Gspurning.

Furthermore, Austria’s team can rely on an extensive support staff, including sports scientist Gerhard Zallinger, mental coach Marc Gassert and the extremely popular team chef Fritz Grampelhuber from the Steegwirt in Bad Goisern, Upper Austria. The players also flew in private yoga teacher Cho Young-sun. So the Austrians lack absolutely nothing at the Schlosshotel Berlin.

Everything is also taken care of in the stadium on the pitch, where Austria’s footballers train. Rangnick introduced the highest level of professionalism two years ago, as can be seen in the training field, which is divided up. Oesen also records everything with a drone.

more on the subject

The mastermind in Rangnick’s shadow

Rangnick has worked with Kornetka the longest, who also worked for Rangnick as a video analyst at TSG Hoffenheim from 2007. The two also run Rangnick Kornetka Consulting GmbH together, based in Düsseldorf. The eloquent 46-year-old, who recently sat in on a press conference for the first time, comes from journalism and also assisted Josep Guardiola at Bayern Munich and Roger Schmidt in Leverkusen.

Kornetka, who was swinging his golf club with some players and coaches on his free Thursday, is always involved when it comes to changes in the game. But he’s not the only one: “Ralf is our boss, who can make decisions himself, but takes us along in all decisions. What makes him strong is that he takes the people around him seriously. We have an enormous amount of expertise and know-how. It would be fatal not to use this knowledge well.”

Schöttel: ÖFB team as “role model” at European Championships

ÖFB sports director Peter Schöttel talks about the round of 16 duel against Turkey, the victory in the strong Group D and the Austrian system as a role model for other nations. “We are where we wanted to be,” said the 57-year-old.

This also applies to “non-playing captain” Alaba, as Kornetka says: “He has a huge amount of experience and tournament experience, which he has ahead of me, for example. He also has experience with the players, so he can cover a lot of different facets. He did that as captain, so his role is not that different.”

Highest professionalism

The players’ supervisors are also popular. Athletic coach Zallinger ensures that the load is properly controlled, and there are vests with GPS trackers for this purpose. The creatine kinase value, or CK for short, provides information about muscle fatigue. Team doctor Michael Fiedler, rehabilitation and fitness coach Martin Hämmerle and nutritionist Martin Rinderer are also working with Zallinger. “We are a unit, all the cogs work together,” said Zallinger beforehand.

On ORF, rehabilitation coach Martin Hämmerle, who is responsible for snowboarders and sailors at the Vorarlberg Olympic Training Center, confirmed this impression. “I met Ralf in Moscow, Lars brought me into the game and I’m happy to be a piece of the puzzle in this brilliant story.”

“We are all a family,” said Marko Arnautovic, and that also applies to the team around the team. Grampelhuber, as chef, also serves Arnautovic and co. home-cooked meals when he can, and barbecues are part of it. Over the last two years, Rangnick has surrounded himself with experts to ensure the greatest possible success. For example, he brought former Sky anchor Thomas Trukesitz on board as press spokesman.
