UEFA Euro 2024: ÖFB players enjoy day off from training

Austria’s team players took a break from their daily routine at the European Championships in Berlin on Thursday. Five days before the European Championship round of 16 match against Turkey on Tuesday (9 p.m., live on ServusTV) in Leipzig, Marko Arnautovic and Co. did not have to return to the team quarters until the evening.

Some took the opportunity to drive into the city center, others for a round of golf on a nearby course. “Free is free. You don’t have to tell us what you’re doing,” said ÖFB sports director Peter Schöttel. Some players also stayed in the hotel that morning.

“It’s completely informal,” explained Schöttel, who wanted to use the afternoon to tour the city. “Since we’ve had good experiences with Berlin so far, we should take a look around,” said the 57-year-old.

Possible reunion with “Oranje”

The Austrians celebrated their two previous European Championship victories against Poland (3:1) and the Netherlands (3:2) in the Olympic Stadium, less than 20 minutes by bus from their quarters in the Grunewald district. If they reach the quarter-finals, a repeat of the duel with the Dutch would await them at the same venue, provided they beat Romania in the first knockout round. “It’s a bit strange, but that’s just how it is,” said Schöttel.
