UEFA EURO 2024: Round of 16 Set After Final Group Matches

The final group matches of UEFA EURO 2024 have been played and the round of 16 has been set. A look back at how these matches unfolded.

Qualified, eliminated

In 8th as group winner: Germany, England, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Romania

In 8th as group runner-up: Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Switzerland, Türkiye

Third places confirmed: Georgia, Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia

Eliminated: Albania, Croatia, Scotland, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Czechia, Ukraine

The first two in each group as well as the four best third-placed teams qualified for the round of 16.

Germany advances to the round of 16 as group winners.

Switzerland qualified for the round of 16 as second in the group.

Hungary is eliminated after finishing third in its group.

Scotland finished fourth and were eliminated.

How are the four best third-placed finishers determined?

In accordance with Article 21.03, the results of the third-placed teams are compared based on their three group stage matches, according to the following criteria:

has. greater number of points obtained;

b. best goal difference;

c. highest number of goals scored;

d. greater number of victories;

e. lowest total of disciplinary points based only on yellow cards and red cards received by players and team officials during all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards during a match = 3 points);

f. position in the general ranking of the European Qualifiers (see l’article 23), or, if the team of the organizing association, Germany, is one of the tied teams, draw.

Once the four best third-placed teams are determined, Article 21.05 of the Regulations determines the table for the round of 16.
