The decision to disallow Xavi Simons’ goal was the right one, according to Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s chief referee. The positioning of Denzel Dumfries influenced goalkeeper Mike Maignan, the head referee believes.
“The decision is completely correct,” the referees’ boss said. He praised English referee Anthony Taylor and the video referee on duty, Stuart Attwell, for what he considered to be the correct actions.
“We think the decision was right and we are happy with the process. There are always elements that can be improved,” Rosetti said, referring to the minute-long interruption. According to critics, the VAR check took far too long.
“Of course, such a check can take less time, but I want to assure you that it is not easy. In this case, the VAR had to check two possible offside situations, the influence of the attacker (in this case Dumfries, ed.) on the goalkeeper check and view an earlier moment of contact between two other players,” Rosetti explains.
National coach Ronald Koeman was less pleased with Taylor’s disallowed goal. According to him, the length of the VAR check was an indication that the goal was wrongly cancelled.
“It’s difficult,” Koeman said immediately after the match ended in 0-0 in front of the NOS camera. “But I don’t think Denzel is hindering the keeper. The keeper doesn’t react, and that’s not because Denzel is there. He’s just too late, he sees the ball too late and it goes in.”
“When a player is in an offside position, but he does not hinder the goalkeeper – as in this case – it is a goal. But it’s not without reason that it took five minutes to check.”
“I can imagine that there is a flag and that the VAR looks at it. It does indicate that they didn’t know either. Because if you need that much time to decide… That keeper can never get there, but not because Denzel is there.”
