The return of Russian youth football teams to international competitions could reduce mutual hatred, admitted the president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Alexander Ceferin.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russia was suspended from international competition by both UEFA and FIFA.

In late September, UEFA gave the green light for Russia’s U-17 men’s and women’s national teams to participate in international tournaments, but later reversed its decision. Ceferin told the DPA news agency that the return of Russian youth teams could help break down mutual barriers.

“Children in Russia are brought up with propaganda that we don’t like them, that we hate them and don’t accept them. The moment they come to Germany and get a hug from 15- or 16-year-old kids from Germany, Slovenia or any other country, they would think differently,” Ceferin said.

“Generations are now being raised to hate even more. The situation in Europe is scary. I’m afraid of that,” the UEFA president continued.

Although athletes from aggressor countries will be allowed to compete in the Paris Olympics this summer as neutral athletes, Čeferin stated that UEFA does not currently plan to follow a similar path in relation to Russian teams.

The aggressor country Belarus has not been disqualified by UEFA and its national teams can already participate in tournaments.
