Ultraman: Rising – A Baseball Star, a Superhero, and an Adorable Baby Monster in Tokyo

This Friday, June 14, the story of a young baseball player forced to don a superhero costume to save Tokyo arrives on Netflix. And to adopt a funny baby monster… ULTRAMAN: RISING – When baseball superstar Ken Sato returns home to Japan to pick up the mantle of Earth-defending superhero Ultraman, he quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe. As Tokyo is besieged by monsters, baseball champion Ken Sato reluctantly returns home to become Ultraman. But the superhero is soon forced to adopt a 10-meter-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju. Sato will then have to put his pride aside to reconcile his mission and his role as a parent, while protecting the baby against forces determined to exploit him for their own interests…

This is the pitch of this new feature film from Netflix, quite dark in its content but super-original and accessible to young people in its treatment. How can you not fall for this baby kaiju – for those who are not initiated into Japanese culture, kaiju is a term which designates strange creatures, particularly the giant monsters represented in Japanese films. Strange and giant, this baby really is, who sometimes transforms into a 10 meter high monster, but always with his adorable mini-penguin face!

Funny too is the relationship that is created between Ultraman and him, the first being obliged to take care of the second, who is ultimately just a big baby who doesn’t sleep through the night, who regurgitates, doesn’t obey for a second and only thinks about playing. A bond of love is created between them, they become a family.

And this film takes us into a hyper-stylized Japanese universe, with the typical skyscrapers of Tokyo, its Godzilla, its constant references to manga culture. With this Ultraman character, who has been part of pop culture there since the TV series “Ultra Q”, released in 1966 already. In short, a very good time of entertainment!
