Umpire Training Session Prepares Officials for National High School Baseball Championships

In order to improve umpire skills ahead of the 106th National High School Baseball Championship Saga Tournament (sponsored by the Saga Prefectural High School Baseball Federation and the Asahi Shimbun Company) and the Autumn National Sports Tournament, the Prefectural Official Baseball Umpires Association held an umpire training session at Miyuki Baseball Stadium in Ureshino City on the 1st.

A total of 50 umpires and officials from the association participated. Baseball club members from three high schools, Ureshino, Saga Agricultural High School, and Kashima High School, cooperated and the umpires reconfirmed the strike zone and other matters.

The instructors included Japan High School Baseball Federation umpire rules committee chairman Ozaki Taisuke, who instructed the students to “think about what stance would be best for consistently calling strikes and balls throughout a game.”

Taiga Kage (20), a third-year student at Nishikyushu University, who will be umpiring at the Saga tournament for the first time this summer, said, “I think I’ll be nervous, but I’ll do my best to be a fair judge.” (Yuichi Kochin)
