Uncertain Future: Naby Keita’s Potential Move to Paris and Olympic Participation

There seems to be a misunderstanding between Naby Keita and Werder Bremen. His future on the Weser is uncertain, his immediate future apparently lies in Paris.

It is still unclear how things will continue with Naby Keita at Werder Bremen. In sporting terms, the past season was anything but good, with the negative highlight being his suspension after the 29th matchday. The 29-year-old’s reputation suffered enormously, and according to his Bundesliga colleagues, the Guinean was the field player who disappointed the most in terms of sport in the traditional kicker player survey. With 25.6 percent of the votes, he came in well ahead of Dortmund’s Niklas Süle (13.2 percent).

It seems almost impossible that he has a future on the Weser. But nothing has been decided yet. Keita will now probably get a stage to put himself in the shop window in Paris. As the Bild reported, the 29-year-old was called up to Guinea’s provisional squad for the Olympic Games – the Bremen player would travel in the U23 team as one of three players older than 23.

“We are happy for Naby and of course will not stand in the way of his participation,” Werder’s new football director, Clemens Fritz, is quoted as saying: “The tournament is certainly a great incentive for him to show what he can do. He can only benefit from it.”

Balm for the soul?

Taking part in the Olympics could also be a balm for the midfielder’s soul, because the failed transfer was not at all convincing on the Weser. He has only played four games, none of them over 90 minutes, in Bremen in 2023/24.

However, he was not able to go beyond the role of reserve for the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations – he was substituted twice and once; he watched the 1:3 quarter-final defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo from the bench.

The Olympic football tournament starts on July 24th and runs until August 9th. Guinea is in Group A with tournament favorite France, the USA and New Zealand.
