For many players selected in tomorrow’s NBA Draft, having their name called by the commissioner will be the highlight of their young basketball careers. Some are hoping for lottery picks, others are simply hoping to hear their name called at some point during the two-round, 58-pick NBA draft that awaits us from Brooklyn, New York.
There aren’t many rumors about this year’s draft.
This year’s draft is shrouded in a little more mystery than drafts of the past. There is much less excitement surrounding the top players selected to be selected with the top picks during Wednesday’s first round. There is no Victor Wembanyama, there is no Zion Williamson and there is no LeBron James in this draft.
Players like Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr and Donovan Clingan are at the top of the wish lists of teams like Atlanta, Washington and Houston that have the top three picks in the draft, but this could be one of those drafts where you have some hidden gems a little further down the board.
The best players in the league don’t always have to come from lottery picks. There are many instances in the past and present of players selected outside of those coveted first picks changing the landscape of the league. Just look at the NBA MVP in six years. Five of those awards have been won by two of the kids on our list.
It may be controversial, but we’re leaving out lottery picks (in the top 14 of the draft) like Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone and Devin Booker.
Tony Parker
Selected 28th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2001 NBA Draft
The Frenchman burst onto the scene in his rookie season, earning the starting point guard job shortly after debuting with Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs. He played for nearly two decades, won four NBA titles and developed one of the most feared point guards in league history in Tim Duncan. He went from barely making the team to having his jersey retired by the Spurs in a career that saw him make six All-Star Games and win a Finals MVP in 2007, but curiously, he was not named among the top 75 players. of the NBA.
Draymond Green
Selected 35th overall by Golden State Warriors in the NBA Draft
Green was selected in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft after being named a first-team All-American and winning a handful of national and Big Ten awards at Michigan State University. In his 12 years in the league, all of them with the Warriors, he won four NBA championships and was named to four All-Star Games. He has become known as the quarterback and enforcer of the Warriors team that was the last dynasty the NBA saw. He is a defensive genius, winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and making the All-Defensive First Team four times.
Manu Ginobili
Selected 57th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Draft
Manu is another one of those gems that the Spurs found deep in the draft after a quick but successful career abroad. He is known as the best Latin American player in NBA history and is the creator of one of the most famous moves of the current era of the league, the euro move. Not only did he win four NBA titles with Tony Parker and the Spurs after going 57th overall in the 1999 draft, but he also led Argentina to Olympic gold at the 2004 Olympics. He was only a two-time All-Star. , but he is widely considered the best sixth man in this league’s history. He won the EuroLeague the year before being drafted by San Antonio and continued to win almost immediately after entering the league. Like Parker, he is not included in the list of the NBA’s 75 greatest players, but the Spurs retired his No. 20.
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Selected 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013 NBA Draft
The skinny teenager from Greece has become one of the most dominant forces the league has ever seen. It took him a while to get used to the speed, size and strength of the players in the league. In his first few years in the NBA, he was developing a body and skill set that would make him an MVP candidate. In his 11 years in the league, he won back-to-back MVPs in 2019 and 2020 and followed up with an NBA Championship in 2021. He is an eight-time All-Star, six-time member of the All-NBA First Team. and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2020. He is still in his prime and looking to lead the Bucks back to the Finals after a disappointing early playoff exit this season.
