Unveiling the Mysteries of Medieval Culture: Archery, Nutrition, and History at Montieri Event

MONTIERI – Second edition of the event promoted by the Aics Archery archery sector “To Live or Die… of Hunger or Arrows?”, scheduled. in Montieri on 29 and 30 June. The theme recalls the so-called “dark times” of the Middle Ages but in reality it will try to do justice to the hidden aspects that are anything but dark of this ancient period.
Two characteristic and cultural aspects of high and late medieval culture will be treated: the first concerns the weapon used by the rich and the poor, the wooden bow and arrows: the construction techniques, its use in important medieval battles; the second will be an excursus on nutrition in history – from the Romans to the late Middle Ages – summarized by two workshops on cooking game and accompanying it with plant foods and drinks.
Agriturismo Poggio alla Luna will serve a themed dinner on Saturday evening, prepared using precious recipes interpreted and translated by Federica Badiali, a geomorphologist and researcher in the field of food and landscape history.

On Sunday, guests of Casale Torricella, the theme of the ancient arch will be developed both in the theoretical field with special tests held by the interdisciplinary MBA working group which since 2017 has been experimentally investigating the technique of ancient arches, both in the reconstructive field and in their practical use.
And not only that: the VII ASD Group will organize a national archery event under the aegis of AiCS, with attention to Historical Archery Shooting. With this competition we want to start a new historical archery tournament by taking up the long experience of the ‘Sagitta Tournament’ which from 2012 until 2020 dominated the historical archery scene in Tuscany and then, little by little, lost enthusiasm.

Also on Sunday, at Casale Torricella and in collaboration with the GerfalcoLab association, an ancient cuisine workshop will be held, which will include a reading – understanding – interpretation of some recipes of the time, followed by the application phase of the execution of the food. In this way, through research and the use of ingredients and preparation techniques as close as possible to the original ones, we will obtain a result that will help us better understand not only the flavour, but also the gastronomic and cultural value of the ancient dish .
