While Angelique Kerber loses her opening match at the Bad Homburg Open against a young Russian, Jule Niemeier pulls off a coup: she knocks top seed Maria Sakkari out of the tournament.

Bitter disappointment for Angelique Kerber: Germany’s best tennis player lost her opening match at the Bad Homburg Open against the young Russian Diana Schneider on Monday evening. After 1:17 hours, the tournament ambassador lost her second grass court match after her maternity break with 5:7, 3:6.

In the left-handed duel with Schneider, who is 16 years younger, she made up a 3:5 in the first set and a 0:2 in the second set, but her Russian opponent was too good. Kerber, who was eliminated from the tournament, then left the court disappointed. “I made too many simple mistakes in the important moments. Despite this, I tried to find my rhythm until the end and somehow win the match, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be,” said Kerber.

“Great atmosphere” in Bad Homburg

Meanwhile, former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier has surprisingly made it into the second round of the WTA 500 tennis tournament. The 24-year-old German beat top seeded Greek player Maria Sakkari 2:6, 6:2, 7:6 (7:4) on Monday afternoon after an improvement in her performance and will now face Paula Badosa from Spain. Niemeier had actually already been eliminated in the qualification, but then moved into the main draw at short notice as a so-called lucky loser after the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto withdrew.

“It’s a special victory. Hopefully I can continue like this,” said Niemeier after the success. “It was a tough match. I knew I could beat players like that.” The atmosphere in the arena was “great,” “the people here are crazy.” Tamara Korpatsch, however, had to say goodbye to the grass tournament. The Hamburg native lost to the fourth-seeded Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 1:6, 6:7 (6:8).

Niemeier on Tuesday against Badosa

On Tuesday, the second round match between Niemeier and Badosa is scheduled for the WTA tournament in Hesse. HR will be showing the match live from 4 p.m. The tournament in Bad Homburg serves as preparation for the sporting highlight of the grass season in Wimbledon. The Grand Slam event begins next Monday.
