Uruguay advances to the quarterfinals, beating Bolivia 5-0

The selection of Uruguay got the ticket for the quarterfinals of the Copa America this Thursday after beat Bolivia, already eliminated, 5-0 with undisputed authority in the group stage. Facundo Pellistri and Darwin Núñez in the first half and Maximiliano Araújo, Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur already in the second scored the goals for Marcelo Bielsa’s team, consolidated as contenders for the title and who have 6 points in group C.

At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford (New Jersey, USA) with a huge presence of La Celeste fans, the Uruguayan team jumped out wearing a white t-shirt and socks and light blue pants.

It only took two minutes for the Uruguayans to enjoy a very clear chance. Pellistri stole on the right wing and put a perfect cross to Núñez, who, totally alone at the penalty spot, connected with a header that caressed Guillermo Viscarra’s post.

Uruguay quickly forgot that mistake as Pellistri opened the scoring just six minutes later. Nicolás De la Cruz – new in place of Giorgian de Arrascaeta – took a free kick at the far post, Ronald Araújo returned it to the heart of the area and Pellistri pushed her with his head at will.

The goal did not change the dynamics of the match at all: the Celeste continued to combine with great ease and harassed the rival goal and Bolivia, unable to contain the gale despite making six changes compared to its match against the USA, barely left its field. The second goal loomed on the horizon, but Núñez continued with wet gunpowder both with a long shot and with a shot already inside the area… until the Liverpool forward, in one of his wonderful unmarkings into the space, received the pass from Maximiliano Araújo and he sent the ball into the net in the 21st. It was his second goal in this tournament.

Pressure to steal the ball as soon as possible, speed in deployment, intensity all over the field. Uruguay dismantled the Verde -this evening in red from top to bottom- and if they didn’t go into the locker room with a bigger score it was because they missed several very clear opportunities, such as a header from Núñez that went off the crossbar.

Uruguay slowed down after the restart, something they also did against Panama and Bielsa did not like at all. With the result in his favor, he also relaxed against Bolivia at the beginning of the second half and the coach was seen gesturing displeased on the sideline. It was enough for him to let the minutes pass, but Uruguay woke up to close the victory in style.

Maximiliano Araújo (two goals already in the Copa América) after a very fine pass from De la Cruz, Valverde after weaving a great counterattack and Bentancur with a header completed the 5-0 against a Bolivia with its arms down.

The end of the party for Uruguay was perfect with the entry in the last minutes of Luis Suárez received as a hero by MetLife Stadium.
