Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira expresses desire to play for Boca Juniors, but acknowledges current limitations

On different occasions, Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira makes his identification with Boca Juniors explicit. Whether in interviews or publishing images on social media. Therefore, in an interview with ESPNthe athlete with spells at clubs like Arsenal and Atlético de Madrid he once again highlighted his desire to defend the Buenos Aires club.

However, Torreira made a point of stressing that he does not want to come across as someone who brings false hope to fans. Thus, despite the constant contact he maintains with the president of Boca (Juan Román Riquelme), he stated that the financial element and his contractual situation with Galatasaray do not allow this dream to materialize in the short term. Currently, his contract with the Turkish team runs until 2028.

“I don’t want to sound like a salesman of illusions, but I’m dying to play for Boca. I’m very honest. And every time I have to speak, I speak very naturally and express my feelings, because I learned in football that sometimes you have to deal with feelings and the truth. I wish with all my soul that I could play for Boca. I talk a lot with Román (Riquelme), I talk a lot. I’m a good friend of Edi (Cavani) too and we’ve already had our conversations. But I understand the reality of the club, the country, my reality too, that today I am part of Galatasaray”, he detailed.

Torreira even took the opportunity to give a hint about how he plans the next steps in his career. In this sense, the former Arsenal man’s idea is to make Gala his last club in European football before a possible return to Boca Juniors:

“I just renewed my contract until 2028 and it’s not easy. It’s not a dream that one day I’ll wake up and say ‘I’m going to Argentina’, because it’s not like that. I wish it were that easy and that I had the chance. But I’m clear that Galatasaray will be my last club in Europe and I want to come to Boca when I’m not too old, because I consume Argentine football a lot, social media, you (journalists) who talk a lot, and it’s not easy football.”
