The US Olympic delegation is one of a handful that will bring air conditioning systems for its athletes at the Paris Gamesa decision that ignores the organizers’ plansof reduce carbon emissions.
Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committeesaid that while the delegation appreciates efforts aimed at sustainability, it will provide air conditioning units for what is typically the largest contingent of athletes at the Summer Games.
“As you can imagine, this is a period when consistency and predictability of conditions are critical to Team USA performance,” Hirshland said Friday. “In our conversations with athletes, this has been a high priority and something that athletes considered a critical component in their ability to perform well.”
The Washington Post reported earlier this month that Germany, Australia, Italia, Canada and Great Britain were among the other countries with plans to bring their own air conditioning units to the French capital.
Olympic organizers have emphasized plans to use a cooling duct system beneath the floors.to reduce temperatures in the rooms of the Athletes’ Village, which will house more than 15,000 athletes and Olympic officials during the Games.
On average, maximum temperatures in Paris on August 1 are 26 degrees Celsius (79 Fahrenheit). The goal is to keep rooms at temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees (73 and 79 Fahrenheit).
Likewise, the rooms will have fans.
“I want the Paris Games to be exemplary from an environmental point of view,” stressed the capital’s mayor Anne Hidalgo, referring to the plans for the Olympic event.
According to the International Energy Agency, less than one in 10 homes in Europe has air conditioning. In Paris, the proportion is even lower.
The study noted that, of the 1.6 billion air conditioning units in use worldwide in 2016, more than half were in China (570 million) and United States (375 million). The entire European Union had about 100 million.
The Olympic Games represent the most important sporting competition in the careers of more than 10,500 athletes who will come to Paris. In these circumstances, some countries have preferred to put environmental initiatives aside for the sake of convenience.
