US sanctions Kaspersky executives after banning antivirus – El Sol de México

The US Treasury Department sanctioned 12 members of Kaspersky Lab’s management after banning the sale of its antivirus programs for alleged risks to national security.

In a statement, the department explained that, under this new order, all properties and assets in the United States of those sanctioned will be blocked, and any financial transaction with them will also be prohibited.

“Today’s action against Kaspersky Lab management underscores our commitment to ensuring the integrity of our cyber domain and protecting our citizens against threats,” said Brian Nelson, Treasury Department Undersecretary for Terrorism.

Yesterday, the Department of Commerce announced a ban on the sale of Kaspersky antivirus due to the company’s ties to Russian military and intelligence authorities.

According to an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security, Kaspersky Lab products have special privileges on the computers where they are installed, in addition to providing access to protected files, which can be used by cybercriminals to compromise information systems.

The restrictions on Kaspersky programs, which prohibit downloads of updates, resales and sales of product licenses, will come into effect on September 29, 100 days after their publication, to give companies time to find alternatives.

For its part, Kaspersky Lab warned that the ban will benefit cybercrime and that the Joe Biden government’s decision was based on geopolitical issues and theoretical concerns without a correct evaluation of the integrity of its products and services.

“Kaspersky does not engage in activities that threaten the national security of the United States and, in fact, has made significant contributions with its reporting and protection against various threat actors that have targeted US interests and allies,” the company said.

The company claimed that it will pursue all available legal options to preserve its current operations and relationships.
