Usman Garuba Not Focused on Future in NBA or Europe, Prioritizes Spanish National Team

Usman Garuba, Spanish international and player for the Golden State Warriors, stated that “right now” he is not thinking about whether his future involves returning to European basketball or continuing in the NBA and that he only has the Spanish team in mind, with which he hopes qualify for Paris 2024 via the Valencia Pre-Olympic.

Asked if if he took the path back to Europe, Real Madrid, his former team, would be the priority, he said: “Let’s say yes, I hope so; as long as things come to fruition. But nothing is clear yet. “To this day I am still in the United States, on July 1 I will officially be a free agent and we will see. I am not thinking about my future in Europe nor about my future in the NBA, right now I am thinking about the national team.”

“To this day I have not had conversations with anyone. On the 1st I am a free agent and we will see what happens from that day onwards,” he also stated when asked if anyone from the white club has contacted him, in an interview granted to the EFE agency during the concentration that the national team is carrying out in Madrid.

Regarding the season, the white team said: “It seems like a great team to me. I am always in contact with many of them and the truth is that it is an incredible team. Facundo Campazzo, ‘Edy’Tavares, Llull, Rudy, Causeur… about All the veterans, what fascinates me about them is their professionalism. Even though their legs get tired with so many games, they continue to compete the same, with work and effort.

“For me it has been a pleasure to share a locker room with them because they have helped me grow and see what basketball is like. Not only with their advice, but by having them by my side every day. I am very happy that they are doing well and they are also adding young players like Musa, Hezonja, Deck continues… it’s a great team and they will get better for sure,” he added.

Likewise, he assured that playing the necessary games to access the lifetime pension provided by the competition is not what moves him to continue fighting to play for an NBA team: “Honestly, when I heard that people think that my obsession is being in the United States because of the pension… I didn’t even know about the pension, to be honest, I didn’t realize it at all later.

“Honestly, if at this age I am thinking about a pension at sixty years old, I have a very big problem. For me that is not important. My goal is not to be in the NBA for the pension, but for the work I put in and for everything.” What has happened to me there. People don’t know what I am sacrificing to be there. For me it is a goal, not an obsession, but a goal because I know that with work, effort and dedication, even if it seems not, things will happen. They always come out,” he said.
