Venezuela advances to the quarterfinals after beating Mexico

INGLEWOOD, California, USA (AP) — Salomón Rondón expanded his legend with Venezuela by converting a penalty at the beginning of the complement and Rafael Romo blocked a shot from Orbelín Pineda from 11 steps in agony so that Venezuela achieved it on Wednesday an unprecedented victory over Mexico that put them in the quarterfinals of the Copa América.

Rondón, the Vinotinto’s all-time leading scorer, scored the penalty in the 57th minute after Julián Quiñones brought down Jon Aramburu inside the area.

Mexico had the great opportunity to tie in the 87th when a handball by Miguel Navarro was whistled in the area to block Jorge Sánchez’s shot. But Romo dove to his right to deflect Pineda’s shot.

The victory before 72,773 spectators at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, was Venezuela’s first in a history of 14 games against Mexico. The Venezuelans also reached the quarterfinals of the continental tournament for the third time in the last four editions.
