Verstappen is satisfied, Pérez blames the result on Ocona – F1sport.cz

Max Verstappen took imaginary pole position for the sprint. Sergio Pérez took seventh place.

Verstappen stopped on the track in practice. He was pushed into the garage and then continued on. The shootout was already without problems and Verstappen won first place for tomorrow’s sprint.

“Honestly, it was a positive day. I’m satisfied. We started the day well, the car was really in a good window. There was a problem with the sensor, but we fixed it quickly.”

“I think we went into qualifying with a pretty strong car. I could push. Of course there are always areas where we can be better, so we’ll look at that tonight. But it was definitely a good start to the weekend.”

Sergio Pérez took seventh, 1.3 seconds behind his teammate. According to the Mexican, Esteban Ocon was to blame. In this case, it was not blocking, but track position. The drivers went into SQ3 at the last minute and made room. But Pérez couldn’t keep a bigger gap on Ocon, because he wouldn’t have time to enter the timed lap.

“I don’t know what Ocon was doing,” Pérez’s race engineer Hugh Bird said after his driver crossed the finish line. “I don’t know why Ocon kept 14 seconds (on Verstappen).”

“The guy is such an idiot,” Pérez replied on the team radio.

“I think we made good progress,” Pérez told the media afterwards. “My first lap in SQ2 wasn’t ideal, I got too deep in the third corner so I went again looking for time. But I think we were in the mix today.”

“Unfortunately, I don’t know what Esteban was doing there, he must have been really slow. I did the last lap within half a second of him and basically had no chance. It’s a shame because I think we had more promising pace, but unfortunately we couldn’t make the most of it today.”

“I think we should have been in the mix today, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we didn’t end up where we needed to be. I am confident that tomorrow will be a better day.”
