«Nostalgia and illusion». That is what Ángel Viadero has felt upon returning to Las Llanas nine years after his first stage as coach of Sestao River. Surely some feelings that the green-black fans share with his recent incorporation. The Cantabrian was about to promote the Sestaota team to the Second Division a decade ago. Now, with a very tight economic situation to compete in the First Federation, he does not set limits or specify objectives. He insists on going step by step and “dreaming.”
Matías Lizarazu, the new sports director, wanted a coach who “knew the house” and had “a game model that excites our fans.” “The coach had to be special and the fans had to feel identified with him,” he commented. In that sense, he says he has found “the right person” in Viadero. He left a pleasant memory among the Sestaotarras and has great experience in these categories, directing Ponferradina, Eibar, Pontevedra, Noja, Burgos, Racing, Moghreb Tetuán, Melilla, Lleida and Sestao River itself. He is a more than proven coach.
He has only repeated on the benches of Racing de Santander and now of Sestao River. In that sense, he has highlighted that “if you like to return to some place, it is where you were happiest and Sestao is one of them.” He has a “great memory” of when he managed to add 71 points to become champion of his group in Second B and, in the play-off, Albacete managed to overcome them both in the first leg and the return leg, to leave them on the edge of the Second Division, being the time that the club has touched it most closely since the extinction of Sestao Sport in 1996.
Although nine years have passed since he last set foot in Las Llanas, Viadero finds “a lot of similarity between the previous stage and now.” «It was and is a serious, compliant club, even at that time it was very difficult to get the budgets. It is an honest and very hard-working project. With that serious, humble and hard-worked project, we were able to set a good level and make all of Sestao feel proud and now the idea is the same, although it will cost because it is a very economically demanding category for the clubs,” he said.
“Make the best team possible”
Currently, the Cantabrian is focused on “making the best possible team, with which people feel identified, forming that praetorian guard that will defend us in the championship with dignity.” That is what is marked now. “A team that competes well, that what you do inside attracts and people want to come see us,” he adds. In that section, Lizarazu showed that Cantabrian football is “a niche market”, just as he highlighted transfers from youth teams such as Athletic, Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Alavés or Racing de Santander in his presentation. As for the neighboring community, “the figure of Ángel is key,” he highlighted, since “he knows very well the profile of a Cantabrian player who has given this club many successes,” he argued.
Also questioned about possible transfers from Athletic, the new sports director revealed that “I have had conversations with the sports management, they have welcomed me with open arms, I have conveyed my concerns to them and they try to assess each case specifically, since From the club’s perspective, the loan has to be favorable for the player’s development process. Therefore, not all the boys are qualified for the game model that we want at the ‘River’. However, there are other boys who benefit from it.”
Finally, Lizarazu also spoke about the seven footballers with whom they are in negotiations with the intention of renewing them, who are: Markel Etxeberria, Álex Carbonell, Gaizka Martínez, Antxon Jaso, Gorka Garai, Jon Cabo and Kepa Uriarte. The sports director indicated that “we have launched renewal proposals to everyone, we have valued them to the extent we consider.” Furthermore, he stressed that “we consider it very important that this hard core of the locker room continues.” These conversations revealed that “some are more advanced than others.”
