Victor Wembanyama is a competitor and as such he makes no secret of his desire to win. From there to putting pressure on the Spurs as some say at ESPN? Not really.
The Spurs have some major decisions to make in the coming weeks, and that starts next week with the draft. The leaders must decide how to proceed with picks 4 and 8, with the possibility of climbing into first position in place of the Hawks. But is this worth it with a disappointing draft? Not necessarily for Brian Windhorst, who spoke on ESPN this Wednesday.
The update on Spurs’ attitude on the market
But another statement made noise during this broadcast, notably that Wembanyama wants to win now. The Spurs want to improve their record, from there to reaching the playoffs in April 2025? Some believe that the pressure is real on San Antonio. And as Don Harris points out, that’s certainly not the case.
That narrative pushed by national talking heads is misrepresenting Victor’s view. The Spurs are in constant communication with him and would be dumb not to get his input, but the plan is the plan and he’s on board.

You should know that the Spurs are indeed sounding out Wembanyama regarding the future of the franchise. It’s not as if the Frenchman has become the GM, but the front office talks with the Frenchman to get his opinion on certain subjects. And we imagine that the draft must have come back into the conversations for example. Nevertheless, and even if he wants to win quickly, count on Wemby to trust San Antonio.
Yes, Victor Wembanyama wants to win as soon as possible. But no, he is not putting pressure on Spurs to force certain arrivals this summer. The Frenchman has full confidence in the front office strategy, which could well pay off within 2/3 years.
