Vliegen reflects on tough defeat in Grand Slam quarter-final

“It was a tough match,” Joran Vliegen told Belga after the defeat. “Both pairs served very well. With the return of the sun, the surface was faster and the bounce higher. In the first set we were hardly able to annoy them in return. We acted better afterwards and the way we won could suggest that we had the upper hand. We could have taken advantage of it. We actually had one or the other opportunity in the first game of the third set, but we didn’t manage to take full advantage of them. Then it got more complicated. And it ends with a 6-1, which is a little harsh, because it was closer than that.”

Their appetite came with eating, Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen obviously hoped to repeat their feat of last year on the Parisian clay. But they could live with the result.

“Quarter-final in a Grand Slam, it’s a great journey,” continued the left-hander from Maaseik. “And when we get to the third set against the world No.2, we say to ourselves that we can win too. Now, we must recognize that Bopanna and Ebden played very well, much better than in their first rounds. We We analyzed their matches and they really raised their level. They were solid on serve and they always continued to return well. That’s what made the difference.
