“The heart decided. I’ve said before that I don’t mind going down with the money, because I want to be here, I’m at home, me and my wife have a family here. I discovered that I have other priorities than just chasing after money,” Vlkanova admitted before the first training under the guidance of coach David Horejš.
Have you already discussed your role in the team with the coach?
Yes, we talked. Even when my return was being discussed, I wanted to meet him. Something happened, we talked together about what we expect from each other, now we just have to start fulfilling it.

Did you sense his interest because at the end of the league he expressed that your arrival was very important to him?
Definitely, I think he also felt that I wanted to be in Hradec and that I wanted to achieve something. Now the European Cup didn’t work out, but because of the stadium and everything here, we have to try for it. We want to get to the top six. No one is saying it will be this way every time, but it should be. It’s definitely not like I’m coming back just to be here.
When did your homecoming begin to be addressed?
Roughly three rounds before the end of the Polish league, a question came from Mr. Sabou, whether this possibility was even possible, if we could come to an agreement. I said that it is certain, that we are still waiting to see what offers will come, but from the beginning I said that if it was in the Czech Republic, I wanted to go to Hradec.
How does it feel to be back?
Nice, I’m happy here. Although there were options to stay outside, I wanted to go back, I’m here at home, I have family and friends here, with whom I can spend time and I’m really looking forward to it.
Did the new stadium play a role in your decision?
He probably played some, but it wasn’t the main reason. If I were to go back to the Czech Republic, I wouldn’t want to join another team. For me, it was a priority to return. I’m glad we agreed.

You spent a year and a half in Pilsen, half a year in Poland, what did it give you?
Above all, experience. I wanted to know how things are going elsewhere, what are the options there. I could compare backgrounds, compare leagues. I can now draw from this not only for myself, but also for the boys who are here in Hradec and who are interested in how things are going elsewhere.
In the west of Bohemia, you played in the famous Champions League in the very first season, what was the experience like?
An unforgettable, fulfilled childhood dream, which was together with the national team. I managed both. One would like to experience it more times, on the other hand, I played all the matches then, I also scored a goal, great experiences for me even though the results and points were not ideal from our side. But we still have to accept that it was Pilsen against such teams, with which you cannot compare much.
What about Poland and the fans there?
It cannot be compared. Fans, that’s fanaticism sometimes. 50,000 people will come to see us, as a team that was already relegated and it was decided, that is something incredible. Moreover, they did not come to scold us for relegation, but they came to support us because they love the club. Even two fan clubs from abroad paid for our training camp in the winter. One from Germany, one perhaps somewhere in England. It is unthinkable in the Czech Republic.
Back to the east of Bohemia. How has Hradec changed since you left it?
It cannot be compared. Facilities, service, other people in the implementation team, marketing, everything is moving.
How did you watch the spring run that almost brought the Votroks to the cups?Constantly, I saw maybe half of Hradec’s matches in the season, even at the end I watched it if possible. I believed that they would manage it, but even if it didn’t work out, it was great for the way it looked after some twenty laps, when it was decided not to go down. Finally a beautiful season.
What about the shift of the game under coach Horejš. He combines, attacks in attack, but there are more changes…
It shows what the coach wants to play. After his arrival, Hradec was uncomfortable every match, they practically did not score goals, it was clear that high pressing does not mean that you will score goals.
What do you think will be the interplay with Vašek Pilař?
I think it will work out, we were together in Pilsen, we always understood each other, I believe that it will work out for us.

Who impressed you the most in the spring?
Probably Karel Spáčil. He came in the winter, played his first season in the league. He delivered the ball excellently, was calm on the ball and is also equipped with excellent speed.
You played in the new Malšák in the Plzeň jersey. But how are you looking forward to being chased by the fans in the black and white jersey?
Lots of. I believe that we will make people happy right away and enter a good season.
Are you following the ongoing Euro? What do you think of him so far?
I follow honestly. I manage at least one match every day. However, I look back a lot on our plans with the family. But I always enjoy watching football.
Did anything surprise you?
Some results, for example Romania beating Ukraine so high. And also the Slovaks, who caught Belgium by surprise.
