Vyškov’s Failed Promotion Ambitions: A Look Back at the 2021-2022 Season

CONVERSATION

They failed to fulfill their pre-season goal in Vyškov. After a great autumn, the team lost several supports and it was noticeable in the spring. Jan Kameník’s team dropped from first place to fourth place and only made it to the playoffs because Olomouc’s second B team could not advance. The spring was marked by offensive troubles, for which the South Moravian team also paid in a double match with Karvina. Just like last year, Vyškov didn’t even score a goal in the play-off and progress among the Czech elite eluded him again. General manager Zbyněk Zbořil explained why it didn’t work out again in an interview for eFotbal.cz.

Vyškov only completed their third season in the second league, but confirmed that they are among the teams with promotion ambitions. These increased even more after the winter entry of the new owner. However, the results did not come due to an unsuccessful winter restructuring of the squad. The first league teams, led by Pilsen, bought the most productive attack of the autumn part and were unable to find an adequate replacement in Vyškov. Even so, only two goals separated the South Moravian team from promotion to the first league.

“Before the season, we announced an attack on promotion, unfortunately it didn’t work out, but it’s definitely not a disappointment from my point of view. We have been in professional football for three years and have played in the playoffs twice. The season started off great and it looked like we could get a much better result, but I must humbly admit that even the play-off is a success for us. In the context of the conditions in which we work here and looking at the clubs we have left behind, it cannot be taken otherwise,” said Zboril.

WILL VYŠKOV DISAPPEAR FROM THE FOOTBALL MAP? THE CLUB’S TRANSFER IS IN THE GAME, THE GENERAL MANAGER ADMITS AFTER FAILED STADIUM NEGOTIATIONS

How much did the winter transfer window affect the final result?

“The impact on the team was great. But we have to say that the change of owner fundamentally affected it. Some of the players who left us had ties to past management and some naturally only took us as a transfer station for the next career move. For some, we knew about the interest of clubs from the first league already in the summer, but we agreed that they would still help us start the season in the fall.”

Who are we talking about now?

“Especially about Cheick Souaré. A fair agreement was reached between the club and the player, which we had no problem keeping in the winter. Somewhat unexpectedly, just before the start of the spring season, we also got the best scorer, Idjessi Metsok. But the circumstances of his transfer were a little more complicated.”

Talk.

“With the new owners came a change in strategy. The transfer then came like a bolt from the blue and we were unable to react adequately to it.”

However, Raimonds Krollis came on loan from Spezia in Italy, who also tried Serie A.

“The biggest problem with him was that he joined us two days before the start of spring and he only had a minimal playing load during the season and a half in Spezia. The situation was not at all easy for him, moreover, the opponents were focused on him and wanted to wipe him out on the field at all costs. He ended up scoring some goals, but I think his and our expectations were a little different. It turned out that he would need significantly more time to acclimatize here.”

Has it been confirmed that even the second Czech league has its own quality and that it is difficult for offensive players to make a name for themselves in it?

“Certainly, but it’s not just a case of Kroliss. Midfielder Allan Delferriere came on loan from Hibernian, who didn’t like it too much with us. It turned out that the possibilities of the Blue Crow Group are really huge, but in the winter we could not soberly evaluate how those players who came on loan will be able to catch on in the second league. Even for the boys, it was a certain clash with reality. The competition is not easy and it can be seen in the fact that clubs that fall from the first league always have problems with acclimatization and returning to a higher level. Look at Příbram or Zbrojovka.”

That is true, but the tie shows that the difference between the first and second leagues is still noticeable. The representatives of the second highest league did not succeed even once out of eight double-headers, and you did not score a single goal in four play-off matches.

“The difference is very big. Based on the results, it looks like advancing through the play-off is an almost impossible task. In the long-term competition, however, it is shown that the teams from the second league can compete well with the first league players. They play a slightly different football here, and teams from the top league have to get used to it.”

SAVED BY KARVINA, BUT HAS NO SURE JOB. EVERYWHERE IT SAYS THAT THE HYSICIAN IS COMING. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY ABOUT IT, BIELAN REVEALED

What is the vision for the composition of the staff for next year?

“Everything is still very fresh. In addition, the Spanish Leganés, which is also owned by our owners, was promoted to the Spanish La Liga on Sunday, so we haven’t had a chance to talk about it with the management yet. We have some expectations, but we’ll see what they come up with. Having a club in La Liga is a huge achievement for the whole organization, so it’s clear where the priorities will be.”

Unlike Leganés, you did not reach the promotion. A positive for the club can at least be the fact that it will not have to move to Prague, where it would play league matches in case of success in the play-off.

“In Drnovice, we got an exception to the second league, so we can stay here. However, on behalf of the whole club, I would like to thank Bohemians, who went out of their way to meet us and would let us play in Ďolíček if we progressed. Thanks to them, we could at least fight for the league.”

Why did you choose Prague, 240 kilometers away?

“We discussed with all the clubs in the area, but for various reasons it didn’t work out anywhere. Karviná and Zlín played for salvation until the last moment. In some way, Slovácko was able to accommodate us, but it certainly wouldn’t be for the whole season, so we had to look further.”
