Werder’s New Winter Signing Julian Malatini Excluded from Olympics After Argentina Dispute

Hard blow for Werder’s new winter signing!

In order to move to the Bundesliga, Julian Malatini (23/came from Defensa y Justicia) skipped the Olympic qualification with the Argentine U23 national team in January. He left the training camp and took a flight to Bremen – much to the annoyance of his coach, former Barca star Javier Mascherano (39).

“I can’t understand why we weren’t even informed about the negotiations beforehand,” the coach ranted at the time. And now he’s followed his anger with action.

After Argentina dispute: Malatini out of Olympics

The coach did not include the Werder defender in his provisional squad for the preparation! 23 other Argentinian talents can still hope to take part in the tournament, 18 of whom can then go to Paris. For Malatini, that train has now left the station.

Werder’s professional boss Clemens Fritz (43) explains the situation from January in an interview with BILD: “It wasn’t that he decided against something. We needed him in Bremen at the time to sign the contract. Of course, it was unfortunate that he was already with the Olympic team. But we just had to get the transfer done.”

At his presentation in Bremen, Malatini was optimistic that he would be able to resolve the dispute with his association in the near future. “There is this conflict at the moment, but I think that the experience I can gain in Bremen will resolve it,” said the professional confidently.

At least for Olympia, that was just a pipe dream. Fritz still encourages the defender: “I think it’s a shame that he wasn’t considered. It’s even more important now for him to perform well for the club and to make a name for himself. Julian is highly motivated and clear-headed, he will go his own way.”
