Why Harry Kane could benefit from Michael Olise’s move to FC Bayern

Michael Olise is apparently about to move to FC Bayern. The Frenchman is full of talent that has not gone unnoticed by the record champions. Why Harry Kane in particular could benefit from this.

It was this one game in particular that made Michael Olise one of the most sought-after talents in the Premier League overnight. The 22-year-old scored a brace in impressive fashion in his club Crystal Palace’s 4-0 win over Manchester United in May.

The sports website The Athletic was already raving: “Olise is destined for the top. It’s a question of when, not if.”

It is clear that this performance made a lasting impression on some of the biggest clubs. United, whom he almost single-handedly defeated, but also Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle United are said to have been working on signing the right winger since then.

However, FC Bayern has now apparently prevailed and, according to consistent media reports, has agreed on a transfer with Olise.

It is no coincidence that half of all top English clubs were interested in Michael Olise. The left-footer has been attracting attention for several years now – and could soon become a superstar.

Olise set Palace record

In his youth, the London-born Frenchman played for Chelsea and ManCity before playing his first professional games for the then second division club Reading FC in 2019. At the same time, he played for France’s junior national teams. In 2021, Premier League club Crystal Palace signed him – and there, too, Olise was able to impress right away.

Already in his first season, the winger stood out as an outstanding provider of assists – in the end he had nine assists in 32 games (with four goals scored). In the 2022/23 season he even managed eleven (with two goals), setting a new club record.

Even in the past season, in which he missed almost the entire first half of the season due to a thigh injury and was also out for a longer period in the second half of the season, he scored an impressive ten goals and provided six assists in 19 games.

His market value quickly shot up – to around 55 million euros according to transfermarkt.de. In addition, his recent performances earned him a place in the provisional French Olympic squad, which is coached by France legend Thierry Henry.

Kompany knows Olise from the Premier League

Even tennis legend Boris Becker took notice of Olise. The 56-year-old, who is an avowed Bayern fan, reacted to the first reports that the record champions might be interested with an unusual appeal to X: “Vincent Kompany, please talk to Michael Olise quickly. FC Bayern will benefit greatly from this.”

Bayern’s new coach will have noticed Olise’s performances in the Premier League during his time as Burnley coach. The 22-year-old is an extremely strong dribbler, can hold onto the ball for longer periods of pressure and is always convincing as a source of ideas. He is also lightning fast and has a strong finish.

It is not uncommon for Olise to dribble down the right side in Arjen Robben style, cut past the defender into the middle and then finish with his strong left foot.

This was exactly how he scored his second goal against Manchester United in May, which not only showed his shooting power but also his ability to learn.

Palace coach Oliver Glasner explained at the post-match press conference why Olise rushed to the side of the pitch after his goal and fell into his arms. Glasner, who has been head coach of the Eagles since February, gave his winger a tip that he took to heart.

Glasner reveals Olise story

The Austrian had spoken to Olise before the game: “He was disappointed because three or four shots were blocked and some went straight to the goalkeeper,” Glasner revealed. Olise often shoots at the far corner. “I said: ‘Try the short corner, maybe the goalkeeper will be surprised.’ He shot at the short corner and scored.”

Olise has also made a name for himself as a crosser, which should be particularly interesting for Bayern in combination with Harry Kane. The Englishman may therefore be served more often in the middle, both flat and with high crosses.

Off the field, Olise, who is the son of a French-Algerian mother and a Nigerian father, is considered to be rather thoughtful.

Last summer, the Frenchman’s move to Chelsea FC fell through spectacularly because the Blues failed to exercise the purchase option in his contract. Instead, Olise extended his contract with Palace until the summer of 2027 – a good development of things, at least for Bayern.
