The Tour de France opens on Saturday with a stage between Florence and Rimini.
But that region has been ravaged by heavy rainfall in recent days. In some places up to more than 100 millimeters.
The Tour roads were also not spared. The road between kilometer posts 63 and 73 of the Saturday stage is partly flooded and chock full of debris.
So there is work to be done for the road workers.
It is not clear whether the traffic infrastructure has been too badly damaged to send the riders across.
There is expected to be some further precipitation today and tomorrow. By the weekend the sun would shine in full glory with temperatures of 30°C.
