Wimbledon 2023: Swiatek’s Unconventional Pre-Tournament Preparations

“I was in Liverpool to see Taylor Swift. It was incredible. I was actually considering going to London for the second time. My team was like, “Okay….” After that concert, three days later, I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep and everything else. We decided that it was better to concentrate on the tournament,” the main interested party admitted with a smile to journalists during the traditional media day at the All England Club.

“But it’s a great experience. Last year, I went to see Adèle after my match. Wait, that was two years ago. In Hyde Park. I think if I lose early, I will have more time to go.”

No preparation tournament for Swiatek

Unlike last year, when Swiatek played the Bad Homburg tournament (feverish, she withdrew before the semi-finals), the five-time Grand Slam winner did not play in competition between her title at Roland Garros and the start of Wimbledon. The 23-year-old preferred to rest.

“Day by day, I feel like I’m gaining rhythm and feeling the ball better. I feel good. It’s certain that we approached this year a little differently because of the number of matches I played during the first part of the season,” she explained.

“I could have played one more tournament before Wimbledon, but I don’t know if I would have been able to be in good shape until the end of the year. You have to know how to choose what is best for the future. I think it’s the smartest decision we’ve made this year. Next year we will also see what my results will be before Roland Garros, because everything depends on the final decision. Now I’m here and I feel like I need to use these training days to feel the best I can on the court.”

Iga Swiatek will open Wimbledon against Sofia Kenin, world number 48, whose best result in London is a third round.
