With all eyes on the grass of the slopes Wimbledon 2024Now all that remains is to finalize the details so that the big event on this surface can begin. Ben Sheltoncurrently number 14 in the world, talks about his memories of the London Grand Slam, the tradition he likes the most and talks about his chances on grass.

The match that captivated him

“The first clear memory I have is probably the 2019 final between Novak and Roger. It was the first time I had enough attention span to watch a five-set match. When I was younger, I wasn’t that interested in watching tennis or watching matches, but that final captivated me,” says Ben Shelton in an interview with the official ATP website.

First memory as a player at Wimbledon

“I had the chance to train for a week at Wimbledon before playing at Queen’s last year,” the American player recalls. “It was a great experience for me, seeing the venue a bit empty. Then, when I came back from playing the tournament in Mallorca, the facilities were full of people, the tournament was starting, it was a completely different feeling. I’ve always found it great to be able to see both sides of the tournament. The more closed side, which seems exclusive, as if there’s no one else there. You can walk around the grounds, it’s relaxing and you can really see the place. Then, when the first day of matches comes, you see the amount of people excited to watch tennis. That’s the coolest part for me, the hustle and bustle of Wimbledon is the best.”

Your favorite London Grand Slam tradition

“I love that the clothes have to be all white. I think it’s great that each tournament is unique and has its own style. Wimbledon does this very well, it’s the only Grand Slam that is played on grass. The all white makes Wimbledon unique and traditional, I like it a lot.”

On his father, Bryan’s, experience at Wimbledon and expectations for himself

“I think it was great because there aren’t many videotapes to see my father playing, but you can find some of his matches from that year (1994) at Wimbledon, those are the matches I’ve seen. Obviously, he played at a very, very high level. very high that week, it was great to see him and talk to him about it,” says Ben. “There are many things to learn on grass. I didn’t start playing on this surface until very late in my tennis development. There are a lot of things to learn that have to do with movement, style of play and things that I am learning day by day. day. It’s a surface where I could do very well and have great successes, but I haven’t done anything yet.
