Women surpass men in internet use – El Sol de México

The proportion of women in Mexico who connect to the internet was higher than that of men for the first time since records began, Inegi reported this Thursday.

The National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Homes (ENDUTIH) 2023 indicates that 81.4 percent of Mexican women connected to the internet last year, while in the case of men the proportion was 81 percent.

Graciela Márquez, president of Inegi, highlighted that this survey has served as a public policy instrument to reduce gaps such as gender.

Meanwhile, the president commissioner of the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT), Javier Juárez Mojica, highlighted that the internet is an enabler of other rights and opportunities.

“The result is good news to overcome these gender gaps in the country,” he commented.

ENDUTIH also noted that the proportion of women who use a cell phone in the country is higher than that of men, with 81.8 and 80.9 percent, respectively.

The number of Internet users is growing

In 2023, 97 million Internet users will be counted in Mexico, 3.9 million more users compared to the previous year, the Inegi report stated.

With this increase, the proportion of Mexicans who surf the internet was 81.2 percent.

The survey indicates that the greatest use of the Internet among Mexicans is to communicate and access social networks, with more than 90 percent of the responses.

Entertainment ranked third among the uses that Mexicans give to the Internet, with 88.1 percent of the cases.
