Women’s Tennis Tournament to Take Place in Hamburg in August After Cancellation of 250cc Event

Hamburg. After the planned 250cc event in the city park had to be cancelled, a women’s tournament will now take place in Hamburg in August.

Less than four weeks ago, it seemed as if the female tennis professionals this year avoid Hamburg After the organizers asked for Sandra Reichel the planned WTA 250 event in the city park (20 to 26 July) had to be cancelled for various reasons, and no alternative location was found in the Hanseatic city, Reichel’s agency MatchMaker gave the tournament license for this year to Romania.

On Tuesday, the surprising turnaround occurred. As the organizers announced, they managed to secure a WTA 125 license for this year at short notice. The tournament, now scheduled for August 4 to 10, has thus fallen somewhat in value, but will take place on the traditional course at Rothenbaum instead of.

Tennis at Rothenbaum: Four women from Hamburg have already confirmed their participation

Four local Hamburg heroes, all of whom live at the Club an der Alster, have already confirmed their participation: world number 75 Tamara Korpatsch (29), German Billie Jean King Cup player Eva Lys (22), last year’s finalist Noma Noha Akugue (20) and top talent Ella Seidel (19). “Especially for this quartet, but also for all other German players, the WTA tournament in the 125 category will be a great opportunity to present themselves to the home fans and continue to play their way up the world rankings,” said Dietloff von Arnim, President of the German Tennis Association (DTB).

“I am very happy that we can still hold a WTA tournament in Hamburg this year. Hamburg is Germany’s women’s tennis capital – both our top Hamburg players and the fans deserve a women’s tournament,” said tournament director Reichel. “The second piece of good news is that the WTA has already scheduled our WTA 250 tournament for 2025. Next year, our 250 event will return to Hamburg from July 13 to 20.”

The chances of finding top international players are still slim this year. In preparation for the US Open (26 August to 8 September), most professionals are likely to focus on hard court tournaments. The clay court event at Rothenbaum is also not very attractive for top stars due to the 125cc category.

Sports Senator Grote is pleased about the new tournament

But Hamburg’s sports senator Andy Grote (SPD) doesn’t seem to mind. “I’m delighted about a high-class women’s WTA tournament at the Rothenbaum. Top-level tennis in Hamburg is an absolute success story that we want to continue and establish permanently in our sports calendar,” said Grote.

As the organizers announced, ticket buyers for the canceled Stadtpark tournament will receive free tickets for the new 125cc event if they keep their tickets for the 250cc tournament next year. Ticket buyers will be informed of the exact procedure by email in a timely manner.

Last year, MatchMaker hosted both the Hamburg ATP and WTA tournaments at the traditional Rothenbaum. However, the DTB then awarded its men’s license to the Tennium agency, causing the previously combined event to fall apart. The ATP tournament will take place at the Rothenbaum from July 13 to 21.
