The world number one in tennis, Iga Swiatek, has cancelled her participation in the WTA tournament next weekend in Berlin at short notice. The Pole, who won the French Open last weekend, cited physical exhaustion as the reason.
“Due to my general physical and mental exhaustion after nine intense weeks, I unfortunately have to withdraw from my participation in Berlin in order to rest and recover,” Swiatek is quoted as saying in a press release. “I was looking forward to playing there in front of the fans, but I have to give priority to my health in order to be able to play the whole season without any problems.”
Nevertheless, prominent field of participants
“This is of course a great pity and disappointing for us and all Iga fans. Nevertheless, we have a high-class field and will see nine days of world-class tennis,” said tournament director Barbara Rittner.
The tournament, which will take place from June 15 to 23 at the Steffi Graf Stadium, will include the reigning champions of the Australian Open, Aryna Sabalenka, the US Open, Coco Gauff, and Wimbledon, Marketa Vondrousova.
German player Angelique Kerber and Japanese Naomi Osaka, two former world number ones, will also be playing in Berlin.
Broadcast: THE DAY, 12.06.24, 6 p.m.
