Wout van Aert Overcomes Doubts and Emotions with Third Place Finish in Tour de France Opener

Wout van Aert sprinted to third place in the first stage of the Tour. He had a lot of doubts, but they can now go in the bin. And that caused emotions for Van Aert. “This feels very good after a difficult period”, he said at Sporza.

After his heavy crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen, Van Aert had to rehabilitate for a long time. As a result, he had to miss the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the Giro. It is now clear that Van Aert had a particularly hard time with that.

“The emotions came from deep down. Remarkable, because Van Aert doesn’t always show them,” says Sven Nys. “Imagine if he had won and taken the yellow jersey…” Then the emotions might have been even greater.

Nys still sees a beautiful Tour for Van Aert. “There are still many beautiful things to come. He will certainly get more chances and the Games will indeed follow. Wout can still grow, physically and mentally.”
