While Alexander Zverev had a really tough time against Cologne qualifier Oscar Otte in the first round of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in HalleWestfalen yesterday, he had a more pleasant two-set win over Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16 on Wednesday evening. The Hamburg player beat the Italian 6:4, 7:6 (5) after 1:43 hours of play and will face Frenchman Arthur Fils in the round of the last eight on Friday, who had clearly eliminated Black Forest native Dominik Koepfer 6:3, 6:4 earlier that day.

Zverev started the match against the unseeded Italian Sonego with an early break to make it 1-0. Sonego held his own with a total of three aces in the first set and did not let his opponent pull away decisively at first, but had massive problems with his first serve. Zverev benefited from this and used his service game to win the set 6-4.

In the second set, Sonego improved his serve, Zverev scored more aces and managed three consecutive service games to zero. In the tie-break, the world number four finally got the upper hand.

Struff on Thursday against Tsitsipas

Zverev, who had to withdraw from the grass tournament in Stuttgart a week ago to recover, can still hope to win his first title in the “German Wimbledon” after reaching the quarterfinals. In 2016 and the following year, the right-hander only lost in the final in Halle.

On Thursday, German number two Jan-Lennard Struff will play his round of 16 match in Halle. The Warsteiner will face the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is eleventh in the world rankings. The path to the round of the best 16 was a real feat of strength for Struff: the 34-year-old beat the Italian Luciano Darderi 6:7 (2:7), 7:5, 7:6 (12:10) on Wednesday. After 2 hours and 34 minutes, Struff converted his 10th match point.
