Zverev sets up semifinal clash with Hurkacz in quest for first grass title

Alexander Zverev, second seed, needed a comeback to advance his duel against the Frenchman Arthur Fils (6-7(5), 6-3 and 6-4) and reach the semifinals of the Halle tournament against the Polish Hubert Hurkacz, winner in 2022, who beat the American Marcos Giron in two sets.

Zverev, runner-up at Roland Garros weeks ago and twice finalist in Halle, longs for the first grass title of his career. The 27-year-old German is already in the semifinals, needing two hours and twenty-six minutes to end the push of Fils, whom he won for the second time in as many matches after the Hamburg event, on dirt, in 2023.

The German will face Hurkacz in search of his third final in Halle. The Pole, ninth in the world, beat the American Marcos Giron 7-6(5) and 6-4, after one hour and 37 minutes. It is the second time that Hurkacz beats the North American, both on grass. The other was at Wimbledon in 2021.

With eight titles in his career, including the one in Halle in 2022, none this year, he faces his third semifinal of the season after scoring a match with 42 winners, eleven from direct aces.

Zverev has always beaten Hurkacz. They have played three times and all ended up on the German’s side. None were on grass.
