A Farewell Tribute: Andy Murray Honored at Wimbledon for Stellar Career Amid Emotional Farewells

Tears from the parents in the stands, great emotions from Andy Murray on the “hallowed turf”: The British tennis star was honored at Wimbledon for his highly successful career. The three-time Grand Slam winner and two-time Olympic champion is playing in his favorite tournament for the last time – he was no longer able to take part in the singles due to injury.

“It was a great time on tour. I would like to keep playing, but it’s not possible,” said Murray. “I would like to keep playing forever.” In 2019, the fighter had a partial hip replacement fitted, and further injuries kept setting him back. “All of the injuries were really tough,” he said.

He found parts of his career stressful, added Murray, whose big moments were played out on the screens of Centre Court. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams praised the 37-year-old Scot as a great athlete.

Murray said his second triumph at Wimbledon in 2016 was his “favorite title”: “I don’t remember much of the celebration. And unfortunately I threw up in the taxi on the way home.” He is looking forward to having more time for his wife and four children in the future.

At Wimbledon he was unable to compete in singles after back surgery. And in doubles with his brother Jamie it was over after the first match. Despite all the support of the 15,000 spectators, the Murrays lost 6:7 (6:8), 4:6 to the Australians Rinky Hijikata/John Peers.

“It wasn’t easy physically today. But I’m glad it worked out,” said Murray, who could still compete in the Olympic Games. At Church Road, his only remaining match is the mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu. The 2021 US Open winner also enjoys great support from fans at Wimbledon – Murray will once again be celebrated.
