A footballer from Avilés, Sporting’s wish, is a new First Division player

Pelayo Fernández, a footballer from Avilés who trained at El Quirinal, has become a new Rayo Vallecano player. The Asturian centre-back, who has been part of the FC Barcelona reserve team for the last few seasons, has become the first signing for the Madrid team after being granted a free transfer. The defender was linked with Sporting de Gijón, but has finally decided to continue his career in the First Division.

After fighting for promotion to the Second Division this season with Barcelona B, a team from the First Federation, the Avilés native ended his contract with the Catalans. His age, only 21 years old, and his ability to bring the ball out of play made him a very interesting asset for many teams, but in the end it was Rayo Vallecano who acquired his services. The centre-back was on the table with Sporting de Gijón, the team where his father, Sergio Fernández, played, but the possibility of playing in the elite has tipped the balance in favour of the Madrid team.

After coming through the youth ranks at Sporting, Fernández joined Quirinal, a team from Avilés, from where he made the jump to FC Barcelona. There he suffered a serious injury in the 21/22 season and another this season, but even so he has always been one of the great defensive pillars of the culé team, who had great faith in his future. Finally, after failing to achieve promotion, Fernández had the chance to leave for another team for free, something he has done to try to achieve one of his dreams: to debut in the First Division.
