The harsh images of Zhang Zhijie, a young Chinese badminton promise just 17 years old, in which he falls struck down on the court, have gone around the world. The deceased young man was playing in an international badminton tournament in Indonesia last Sunday when the fatal event occurred and the medical services were unable to save his life, which is why they have also been criticized for ‘being slow to act’.
According to sports authorities on Monday, Zhang Zhijie collapsed on Sunday night while facing Japan’s Kazuma Kawano at the Asian Youth Tournament in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The match was 11-11 when Zhang suddenly fell to the ground and a medical team had to attend to the player on the spot, then take him to the hospital by ambulance, but unfortunately the youngster died shortly after.
“Chinese player Zhang Zhijie collapsed on court during a match,” Badminton Asia and the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) said in a joint statement. “The player was treated by the doctor and the tournament medical team and was then taken to the hospital by ambulance in less than two minutes,” they said. “The badminton world has lost a talented player,” the statement concluded.

«Sudden cardiac arrest»
Later, PBSI spokesperson Broto Happy said at a press conference that “medical reports indicate that the victim suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.” Happy also defended the intervention of the medical staff and the tournament organizers, criticized after the dissemination of images of what happened and the supposed hesitant response when the player collapsed on the court. The spokesperson assured that the medical teams “had to wait for the referee to allow them to enter the field.”
The International Badminton Federation was also “saddened by the loss of emerging badminton talent Zhang Zhijie” and expressed its “condolences to his family, his colleagues, the Chinese federation and the entire badminton community in general.”
