Acapulco drops domestic tourism figures – El Sol de México

The impact of Hurricane Otis, still visible on the coast of Guerrero, not only affected tourist activity in the port of Acapulco, one of the country’s most traditional destinations, but also affected national domestic tourism figures.

In the first four months of the year, 17.8 million domestic tourists arrived in hotel rooms, 1.2 percent lower than in the same period in 2023, according to the Center for Advanced Research in Sustainable Tourism (STARC).

According to the organization, 43.7 percent of the decrease is due to the lack of recovery of tourist infrastructure in Acapulco.

The report, presented on Monday, indicates that between January and April there were 64.8 million domestic travelers who stayed at least one night in a hotel room in a national destination, 2.4 million fewer than in the same period last year.

But Acapulco was not the only factor that influenced this decline in local tourism. The recall of Airbus 320 and 321 neo aircraft by the turbine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney also affected this sector.

Francisco Madrid, president of STARC, recalled that this type of aircraft makes up an important part of the fleet of airlines such as Volaris and Viva Aerobus.

The recall has halted the operations of a significant portion of these companies’ fleets, resulting in the number of domestic air passengers falling by 4.7 percent in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2023.

Madrid highlighted that the accommodation sector has been affected by this decline in the national market, with an average occupancy of 60.3 percent in the reference period, 1.4 percentage points lower than last year.
