African cycling in the spotlight at the Tour de France

Eight young African riders will be the special guests of the Tour de France on Thursday 4 July, the national holiday in Rwanda, where the World Road Cycling Championships will be held next year. Four men and four women will be presented in the morning on the signature podium in Mâcon, three Rwandans, an Eritrean, a South African, a Tunisian, an Egyptian and a Namibian. They will meet the riders and in particular the two Africans from the Intermarché team, the Eritrean Biniam Girmay, stage winner on Monday in Turin, and the South African Louis Meintjes, before cycling the last 30 kilometres of the course ahead of the stage. The young riders will be accompanied by Ethiopian Tsgabu Grmay, a former professional who competed in three Tours de France between 2016 and 2018. Samson Ndayishimiye, the president of the Rwandan cycling federation, will also be present as part of the visit of a Rwandan delegation one year before the World Championships which will take place in September 2025 in Kigali.
