On Thursday (from 2 p.m.) Alexander Zverev (27) will face the American Marcos Giron (30) in the second round of Wimbledon. The Hamburg native is in excellent form and is the favorite going into the second round duel. Will he make it to the third round or will Giron pull off a surprise?

After just 1 hour and 53 minutes, Zverev’s first round match in Wimbledon was over. His opponent, the Spaniard Roberto Carballés Baena (31), was unable to challenge “Sascha” sufficiently throughout the match. The fourth-ranked player in the world strolled to a confident 3-0 victory (6-2, 6-4, 6-2). The reigning Olympic champion has now won 16 of his last 18 singles matches on the ATP Tour.
Zverev has big ambitions for the tournament, partly due to his strong form: “This is the most open Wimbledon tournament we’ve had in 20 years. It’s the first time that I really feel like I’m a contender here, maybe I can win the title.”
Giron is a clear outsider
On Thursday, world number 46 Marcos Giron will be waiting in the second round. The two players have only met once before: in the first round of the 2022 Australian Open. There, Zverev won in four sets. The American is having a mixed year in 2024, in which he was only able to win half of his matches. In the first round, Giron won 3-1 against Briton Henry Searle (18), who is not listed in the top 500 of the ATP world rankings.
Zverev wants his first Grand Slam title
The 27-year-old is still missing a Grand Slam title in his career. In mid-June, he lost the final of the French Open to Carlos Alcaraz (21). Now it’s time for the next attack in Wimbledon. Will he pull off the big win on the “sacred turf” this time?
