Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal Tie 1-1 to Share Podium in Ciudad de los Reyes Cup

The ‘blanquiazules’ and ‘rimenses’ decided to close the match with a tie of one to one, sharing the podium of the international competition promoted by La Victoria. Hernán Barcos and Irven Ávila scored.

Alianza Lima tied 1-1 against Sporting Cristal, at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, in the definition for 3rd place in the Ciudad de los Reyes Cup, a place that was deserted since both protagonists agreed to share the podium at the last minute.

The opening of the scoring in Matute occurred at 33′ minutes through the experienced Irven Ávila, after a pass from Leandro Sosa. The joy for the ‘Rimenses’ was short-lived, since the veteran Hernán Barcos, around the 35′ minute mark, matched the score with a remarkable definition from a pass from Jeriel de Santis.

In the complement there was no more movement on the scoreboard, but there was in the process of the match due to the constant modifications of the squads. Towards the end, Pablo Sabbag and Gonzalo Aguirre entered to continue adding minutes and thus convince coach Alejandro Restrepo.

After the final whistle, the match was expected to be decided by penalty shootout, but after a brief discussion between Alianza and Celeste, an agreement was reached to share third place in the Copa Ciudad de los Reyes in a most unusual event.
